healthy mamas
The Olive Branch for Children (TOBFC) Healthy Mamas program focuses on two types of services: pre-natal and maternal health care and reproductive health care. The services offered in our Healthy Mamas program are accessed by women living in remote communities through our Mobile Medical Clinic program.
We have created a separate Healthy Mamas program to minimize barriers to access and recognize that these are targeted services that are designed to meet the needs of vulnerable women. We want to ensure that women feel comfortable and safe to connect with our staff to receive all the services we offer.
Pre-natal and Maternal Health Care, Including Birth Kits
We ensure the women connecting to our Mobile Medical Clinic receive the prenatal care they need to stay safe and healthy during the duration of their pregnancy. Maternal health care services are also provided to support vulnerable women after they have delivered their children. We know a healthy and happy mama is crucial to a happy and healthy family.
As part of this program, TOBFC provides 480 free birth kits annually to vulnerable women, which allows them to deliver their babies in registered health facilities. These kits can be cost prohibitive for many but are mandated by ALL medical facilities in Tanzania. We distribute birth kits to women who otherwise would not be able to afford the cost of the kits. Each birth kit contains three pairs of surgical gloves, a plastic dish and a plastic bed sheet.
Reproductive Health Care
Our expanded Healthy Mamas program now includes comprehensive family planning services operated through our Mobile Medical Clinic. The program connects vulnerable women to birth control. This allows women to exert control over their reproductive journeys.
Our newest initiative is the provision of gynaecological education and health services. We launched a campaign that connects women to vital information about female cancers. Additionally, for women that present with symptoms at the Mobile Medical Clinic, we pay the referral costs so they can access cervical cancer screening. Our goal is to provide these services to over 500 women per year.
